NASTAR returns to Snow Summit, California!!! Thread 1 of 2

I had conversation with my good friend and Amateur Ski Racing's Top Ambassador, Gary Dranow many months ago. He was very excited to inform me that he was working with his long-time friend Chris Riddle - Director of Marketing at Snow Summit to bring NASTAR racing back to Snow Summit, located at beautiful Big Bear Lake in Southern California.

Gary and Chris worked diligently to make this happen. After numerous calls, meetings and support from Management, Snow Summit along with the Alpine Sport Center is again hosting NASTAR Ski Racing!! 8)

Here's a shot of Chris (in the foreground) and some of the outstanding members of the Snow Summit Race Dept, setting up the race course for the day!!

Gary had proudly boasted about the solid racing program at Snow Summit and told me that I needed to experience this mountain first-hand and share my trip with you.

We drove West out of Phoenix and across Death Valley, CA through Blythe and Palm Springs. You cannot believe how many windmills are sitting on the hills around Palm Springs, Indian Wells and Palm Desert! They seemed endless.......

We stayed in Redland, CA and took the scenic and very windy road - Hwy 18 - out of the LA Basin, and up to Big Bear Lake. Our first stop was the Bear Bottom Lodge to get signed in for the NASTAR race.

    Then, onto the Mountain...........

The view from the top looking back to the west at Big Bear Lake is Awesome!!! 8)

Well, let's check out the race course. Snow Summit has a great Junior, Masters and Team Series race program. We spent some time in the morning watching all of the Junior racers get ready for the GS race!! I was really impressed with the pitch and the length of the ski hill. This is a true 30 second race course and there's plenty of terrain change to challenge racers of any ability!!! 8)

Looking straight up the course from a point just above the finish area. Folks this hill has some character, and yes, it's steep!!!

Since we had an entire field of Junior Racers, they set the first course lower on the mountain for the smaller kids. take a look at the start house, First Rate!!! 8)

This young man was hoping to get an early peek at the race course while the crew was setting up. I told him he would make the NASTAR Forum!!

Here's a fly-over shot of the finish area as Chris and the Race Dept continue to prepare the course for the day!! (Helmet Cam? naw!!!)

Well, it's time for the kids to line up for their GS. There musthave been 50-60 kids racing in the morning on the lower course! (Sorry for the crummy picture)

I think the most impressive aspect of this morning race was to see the participation and attendance of the parents and members of the community all standing on the race hill cheering on their kids!! This community should be very proud of their program and their support of this program! :D There was very frequent course maintenance by volunteers and this made everything run smoothly! These people know how to host a ski racing event!!!

At the finish area, volunteers were manning the results board. Everyone's times were posted and the PA announcer was great!! All the racer's gathered at the results board to check their times and handicaps. It was truly a stadium event.

Well, this will conclude the morning session of racing at Snow Summit.

Stay tuned for the PM race on the big hill... and you will have a chance to meet one of Snow Summit's (Young Gun's)!! His initials are J.C.
