If you can announce status/changes on your website, it helps enormously. Some mountains will confirm that NASTAR is ON that day, or post that it has been cancelled. Reliable info of this type is important since many of us travel a long way for NASTAR.

Maybe we will see you there...

Munster, you are so right about dates being cancelable without notice. That is going to change here and now. Please let me update racers on certain HV race dates.

Here area few events during the season that takes up not only our NASTAR hill but ever race hill available. Let me give you some dates when NASTAR will not be in operation:

Jan 8&9 (SAT SUN) Cleveland Metro (closed)
Feb 13th (SUN) Mountain Dew Challenge (open)
March 5th (SAT) Cleveland Metro (closed)
March 19th (sAT) Gun's and Hoses (open to snowmakers)

There may be more dates announcer later, I will update this post whenever a change occurs. We never like to close the course but some events are HUGE here at Holiday Valley. The Gun's and Hoses race (3/19) encourages snowmakers from ANY ski area to compete. CALLING ALL NORTHEAST SKI AREA SNOWMAKER, this is the largest event of it's kind.

Please feel free to call ahead (716) 699-2345 or check www.holidayvalley.com

I try and get up to the Valley at least a couple of times during the season. I've been racing Nastar for quite a few years (I think Miller Lite was the sponsor when I won my first metal maybe in 90 or 91 and Bob Beattie (SP?) used to be the spokes person back then.

I know I appreciate the list of dates that the course would not be opened. I knew about CMSC race dates. I did not know you had the Mountain Dew Race this year.

A couple of comments that I would make about the Nastar course. The finish on more than 1 ocassion has been a problem. You come down through the course and either have persons stopped at the bottom or skiing across from the hill to the left of Cindy's Run (going down the course Foxfire?) and it can be hard to avoid these skiers. This is also starting into the slow skier's area, but you can't just start a hockey stop just past the finish line. More fencing at the bottom continued down towards the run out to the lift would help. Race in progress signs help but a closed off course is much safer for all on a busy weekend.

It would be nice to have a little longer course that would be closer to 20 seconds par time since Nastar would like 23 seconds average (but I would not advocate moving the start much higher than it is presently). Your pacesetter has had a high handicap compared to some of the other resorts nearby. Sounds like there is a new pacesetter for this year (Campbell is gone?) Did your pacesetter attend the regionals at Hunter Mtn?

Anouncing the time and the improvement needed (if any to get or move up to a higher metal) at the finish shack is always nice. I do not like to have to ask back up at the top. It also is nice to be able to stop at a desk after the end of the day to get a metal that you may have not picked up at the starting area during the race hours of operation.

As others have stated, fair and consistent pacesetting results is a must, you never want to wonder if the par time is a made up number (because their was not a pacesetter or the pacesetter did not run the course that day).

Ready for opening this week? When will Nastar get started up at HV for this season? Get the web site to anounce the opening weekend.

Good luck in your new position and duties.

    HV update

Thanks for your input RShea, I have printed out your post and will bring it to the next meeting. Some items I can answer right now.

Last weekend Dom Yantamasi and Cal Baker went to Hunter, Ill update you after I meet with them this weekend. Cambell "Soup" Dawson will still be around. He is now bar manager at the DEPOT so stop in and say Hi.

The Valley opened Thursday with great hardpack surface, looks like the first race will be December 26th but hope to go even sooner if possible.

We will increase the amount of fence at the top and bottom. I know exactly what you mean about traffic in those areas. The course will remain the same for this year but we are told to watch for huge improvements for next season. Uncle Pete

Hmm and if you have the people, Try to slip the course every once in a while, cause well its just nicer  And if there is a lift over it, try to make sure no 'crap' (water bottles, trash, etc) ends up on the course, cause thats just well no good

Thanks skidude, you just gave me a great idea. If I play your requested song on our new PA, you must slip one time. My nephew Spencer already requested Linkin Park and The Hives (he owes me two slips). Uncle Pete
