    Cool Nastar Midwest Open/Championship

I figured I will start this thread since no one else has. Nastar has announced it will be holding a Midwest Championship this December 15-16, 2012 at Spirit Mountain in Duluth, MN.

I will be going, and hopefully many other midwesterners will as well. I have been hoping there would be a large Nastar event west of Lake Michigan and now we have one - although it is very far north. Hopefully that will not deter Nastar racers from attending.

I am sure many Minnesota, Wisconsin and UP Michigan racers will want to attend! Even my husband is going even though he does not ski. He says he has always wanted to see that part of Minnesota. Long drive from Chicago but we are planning on it.

    See you there,

It is nice to have one anywhere but Colorado or the east coast when you are from the central US. I also welcome any chance to run some gates and get my other first turns in for the season before Jan 1 which is when most resorts even think about allowing their sparce early season space to be used for race courses.

KC, MO is the closest ski hill to Tulsa, OK and they are not offering NASTAR this year. So I guess it is a 12 hr, 800 mile drive ($600 to fly + rental car) for me if I want to attend.

We got a great deal at the Duluth Quality Inn via Hotels.com so we are all set. It was $72 a night. The one in Marquette ended up being nice last year so I figured we would give the one in Duluth a try.

TulsaTom, sorry to hear there is no Nastar close to you. If you decide to travel to Duluth I am sure you would have a great time! These Nastar regional events are always a lot of fun.

Looks like Spirit Mountain is planning on opening tomorrow (3 runs). Weather hasn't exactly been cooperating around here. Hopefully it'll start getting cold soon.

Also if you plan on more than just the 2 days, you might want to consider their cheap pass card that you can load up with as many $28 days as you like ($22 for the kids and old folks)

Anything new about the Midwest Championship? How many have signed up? Chuck, is it getting colder up in Minnesota?

It is 58 in Chicago today, which is very depressing. Sigh.

I live 3 hours south of Duluth - barely been below freezing most days. Duluth weather has been below freezing at night and most days - they actually got a bit of real snow last week. I would also be curious to know how many people have registered.

    Snow report from Spirit Mtn

    HOURS: Noon - 8pm

    WEATHER: Mostly Cloudy

    TEMPERATURE: 18-25

    WIND: WNW @ 10 - 21 mph

    BASE SNOW DEPTH: 24" - 36"

    SNOW CONDITIONS: Machine Groomed

    NATURAL SNOW - PAST 7 DAYS: 4"

    NATURAL SNOW - PAST 24 HOURS: 0"

    SNOWMAKING: YES

    GROOMED LAST NIGHT: Yes

RUNS OPEN: About 25% of Terrain

3 main runs; "Bindle Stiff", "Sissor Bill", and "Sky Hooker"
2 smaller connecting runs are open; "Powder Monkey" and "Downhill Musher".
    LIFTS OPEN: 2-3

"Spirit Express" with "Summit Chair" if needed.
BIG AIR TERRAIN PARK: The Terrain Park is not open yet but we DO have a number of features available! Jam Box, Shotgun Rail, Double Rail, Damage Spine, Big Pill, the Flat Down Flat Bar, and the Continental Ledge!

BEGINNER AREA & TOWS RUNNING: Lakeside Beginner Area is open. The Kaser Ski Carpet will be open at some point as well.

NASTAR RACING: Tentative Start for NASTAR Racing is Dec. 26th

Thanks Chuck. Weather.com is calling for a turn in temperatures starting Sunday so Spirit can make snow if they don't have enough natural stuff. I guess the cold air and snow that has been sitting on the Canadian border will be moving south next week. Supposedly this is the last warm up for the season (but I have heard that before).

Yeah, I would like to know details about attendance, etc....but I am sure people will register next week. There are always last minute registrants. I have to believe there will be a good crowd from Minnesota and northern Wisconsin.

I really like the fact that they have nordic courses that my husband can use for snowshoeing. Spirit looks like a good place for the event.
