Thumbs up

I guess I'm a bit late for this since the location has already been decided, but I created a map that shows the geographic concentration of 2009 Nationals qualifiers:

http://maker.geocommons.com/maps/9248

Dark blue = 0-12 qualifiers from this city
Light blue = 12-25
White = 25-38
Light red = 38-50
Dark red = 50+

Based on that, I think they should just build a ski hill smack in the middle of Lake Michigan, and have the race there ;)[/b]

Chase,

Great job the the Total U.S. Map of the NASTAR 2009 Championship Qualifiers (Once I used the zoom out controls on the left of the map, I realized that you had encoded the data for not just the Midwest but the entire U.S.).

It also also quite useful to be able to click on an individual dot to find out the city name and exact number of qualifiers from that city. It was interesting to see that Marquette, MI had 156; Minneapolis, MN 152; St Paul, MN 138; Madison, WI 122; Duluth, MN 119; Bloomfield Hills, MI 113; Traverse City, MI 111; Petoskey, MI 106; Kalamazoo, MI 99; La Crosse, WI 89; Harbor Springs, MI 83; Cincinnati, OH 82; Cadillac, MI 77; Iron Mountain, MI 56.

Since you have compiled this data, is it possible to create 3 more tables at your convenience to help understand the likely potential participants for the NASTAR Open events at Crystal Mountain, MI 1/9-10/10 and Windham Mountain, NY 2/6-7/10?

a) Table 1 - Number of qualifiers by state for all states listed alphabetically.

b) Table 2 - Number of qualifiers by distance from Crystal Mountain, MI (i.e. total # within 50 mile radius, 100 mile radius, 150 mile radius, 200 mile radius, 250 mile radius, 300 mile radius, 350 mile radius, and 400 mile radius)

c) Table 3 - Number of qualifiers by distance from Windham Mountain, NY (i.e. total # within 50 mile radius, 100 mile radius, 150 mile radius, 200 mile radius, 250 mile radius, 300 mile radius, 350 mile radius, and 400 mile radius)

Thanks in advance for your help.

I hope I didn't step on any nastar.com toes by doing this data mining exercise. If so, someone please let me know and I will delete this map.[/b]

Wow! That is VERY cool! I hit the dropdown arrow over on the "layers" box and moved the slider to the right.... the dots got less and less numerous. When I got to the point that the dots disappeared, I started sliding it back... The top areas started appearing in order:

1. Park City - 358
2. New York City - 189
3. Steamboat Springs- 186
4. Aspen - 184
5. Marquette, MI - 156

I'm proud of my little town!! Park City is just outside a major metropolitan area and is a very popular ski destination. New York is obviously the largest metropolitan area in the United States, and Steamboat and Aspen are major destination resorts.

Marquette has a population of 22,000 people, and believe it or not, is the biggest town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan!! We are very passionate about ski racing here, and this map really shows it!! Thanks for compiling all that data.

Not to be a stick in the mud, but I sure would not pay $125 registration fee, or anything over $100 and I would think twice about $50. Let's just race and forget about a food tent with dry popcorn and cold pizza.

You'll get your money's worth. If I'm able to attend I'll be happy to pay the fee (actually, my cost is higher than most because I compete in two different disciplines). If you've ever attended a NASTAR Nationals you'll have some idea what expect at a regional event. The folks who went to Sunday River last year were unanimous in their enthusiasm for the overall experience. Bill Madsen and his staff have learned how to finetune the process and know how to put on a terrific show.

Give some serious thought to participating. You won't regret it.

Yah, I should just stay home. I'll probably have to clean my fish tank that day anyways.

PS: This is Michigan. 15% unemployed 65% underemployed. If we're paying for pizza it better be good!

Well, the midwest location makes perfect sense now. Michigan has the most national qualifiers by far. And when you add in Ohio and Indiana skiers (who most likely wouldn't travel to Minnesota) the total target audience is 4,434. Assuming that a good chunk of Illinois skiers are from Chicagoland, the trip up to Crystal isn't bad at all.

Based on these stats, I think Nastar HQ made a great choice. Keep up the great work, guys..... This program keeps improving all the time.
