Last Saturday a very large slab let go. Perhaps a lot of manmade snow on 20 inches of lake effect. Video courtesy of Wisp Resort.

So what exactly happened? Was that just bare ground exposed after the base gave way?

It was bare ground. Someone was poaching before the season started and triggered the slide. It slide again about a week later. They have pushed the snow around now. Somehow the ground stayed warm - perhaps an underground spring that was still running? It happened at Holiday Valley last year. The skiers left side was about 10 feet deep.

Now when some salesperson in Maryland trys to sell you on the recco system it might make sense.

So let me get this straight...a gun shot set off the slide!? Yeah, I understand that on mountain peaks where there is a "Grinchlike" wind blown overhang, but on OUR local gentle slopes? Wow.

And what is the recco system?

Google it. RECCO is an avalanche rescue system.

Not a gun - a skier poaching the slopes before they were open.

    Wow.

Poacher = Hunter, and no idea what Recco is....

Maryland really is basically a different country when it comes to skiing, isn't it?
