    Okemo opens Thanksgiving Day!

"The countdown to opening day is nearly over! Excitement takes hold since Okemo Mountain is wrapped in snow and good cold weather is abounding. Ité─˘s really just one more day to our opening day and a very happy Thanksgiving.

Opening day will cover terrain for advanced skiers and riders on four trails: Upper World Cup, Buckhorn, Countdown and Dropoff, with the Northstar Express and Glades Peak Quad. Please note that we will be shuttling up to the Northstar and downloading off again after skiing and riding. Nighttime snowmaking temperatures in the forecast will help us to add new terrain as quickly as possible! Stay on top of Okemo.com for more updates on whaté─˘s new and happening."

Okay that means we take a chairlift up, take a connector to the top half of World Cup. After that descent take another lift up, ski a flat section back and repeat the process. When done, we take the main chairlift back down. At least we're skiing! I just view it as baby steps to the start of a great season at Okemo!

    Ski reports

Reminds me of a ski report I saw in the Boston Globe in 1959:

Belknap Mountain - "2 inches of ice on a base of dirt and rocks, Skiing
    Excellent"

    Okemo

Okay, it's open. I made a half dozen runs on skis yesterday morning, played golf in the afternoon, and snowboarded this morning. My season has begun!

    East Coast

    EAST COAST REPRESENT!!!!!

Nice work Okemo!!!!....anywhere elso keeping it real for us "ice skiers" over hear on the Atlantic?

Nubs Knob.....that's funny. My dad always tells me about that place....doesn't it have like on chair and one run???? He grew up in Detroit.

But, I'm not hating....it was 70 degrees down here in Philly this week. I threw some ice cubes on the steps in my house and wore my goggles while wearing shorts on the way out the door to my car the other day. It was the best I could do!!!!

    Think cold....then think snow!

    Nub's Nob

Nub's Nob currently has eight chair lifts and a handle tow for the super pipe. We may not have the largest hill but we have a great racing program. There are night leagues on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday night we have a speed series of various events down different slopes. On the weekends and holidays there is always Nastar which usually draws between fifty and seventy racers. The local schools also practice and race as do the CUSSA racers. We may be small but we do a lot to promote racing.

If he's talking about the Detroit area, he's probably talking about Pine Knob. I think they now have ummmm...250' or so (they just keep bulldozing more sand to the top every summer :D ).

The most intersting info on Pine Knob and Mt Holly is: 1)They have the highest per capita skier count in Michigan (used to be the entire east coast as well, but it's been awhile since I checked it out), 2) They have the most powerful and advanced snow making equipment anywhere and can have their 'hills' open in 24 to 48 hours - we're talking completely open - 100%! 3) They used to also have the highest lift capacity in the midwest and east as well.

I always thought those were some pretty impressive statistics for our local 'garbage dumps' .
